Support for Dioko

1. Getting Started

Welcome to Dioko

Dioko is a personal finance tracker that lives entirely on your device. There are no subscriptions, no cloud accounts, and no servers — your financial data stays with you.

The core idea is simple: add every regular expense and income stream once, and Dioko scales everything to monthly, quarterly, and yearly totals automatically — so you always know your true financial position.

First Launch

When you open Dioko for the first time you will see the Sign In screen.

  1. Tap Sign Up to create your account.
  2. Enter your email address and a password, then tap Sign Up.
  3. Dioko will ask if you'd like to enable biometric login (Face ID or Touch ID) — tap OK to enable it or skip past the prompt to use your password instead.
  4. You'll be taken to the Sign In screen. Enter your credentials to log in.
  5. On your very first login, the four-slide onboarding screens will walk you through the app's key features. Tap Skip at any time to go straight to the dashboard.

App Layout

Dioko has five tabs at the bottom of the screen:

2. Account & Login

Creating an Account

  1. On the Sign In screen, tap Sign Up.
  2. Enter your email address and a password.
  3. Tap Sign Up.
  4. You'll receive a prompt to enable biometric login — see the section below.

Signing In

  1. Open Dioko.
  2. Enter your email and password.
  3. Tap Sign In.

If biometrics is enabled, Face ID or Touch ID will trigger automatically when the Sign In screen loads — you may not need to type your password at all.

Biometric Login (Face ID / Touch ID)

Biometric login lets you open Dioko without typing your password.

To enable biometric login:

  1. Go to the Profile tab.
  2. Toggle the Biometrics switch on.
  3. Authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID when prompted.
  4. The setting is saved — on your next login, biometrics will trigger automatically.

To disable biometric login:

  1. Go to the Profile tab.
  2. Toggle the Biometrics switch off.
  3. You will need to use your email and password to sign in going forward.

Note: if your device does not support Face ID or Touch ID, the biometrics toggle will not activate and a message will appear explaining that biometrics are unavailable on your device.

Resetting Your Password

  1. On the Sign In screen, tap Forgot Password.
  2. Enter a new password and confirm it.
  3. Authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID to verify your identity.
  4. Your password will be updated.

Important: password reset requires biometric verification. If biometrics are unavailable on your device, please contact support.

Signing Out

  1. Go to the Profile tab.
  2. Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
  3. You will be returned to the Sign In screen.

Signing out does not delete your data. All transactions, categories, and profile information remain on the device.

Deleting Your Account

  1. Go to the Profile tab.
  2. Scroll down and tap Delete Account.
  3. Confirm by tapping Delete in the confirmation prompt.

Deleting your account permanently removes all data stored by Dioko on your device, including your credentials, transactions, categories, profile information, and notifications. This action cannot be undone. Export your data first if you want to keep a copy.

3. Adding Transactions

Transactions are the heart of Dioko. A transaction is any regular expense or income — a subscription, a utility bill, a salary, rental income, and so on.

Adding a New Transaction

  1. Tap the + (Add) tab in the bottom navigation bar.
  2. Select Expenses or Income using the segmented control at the top.
  3. Fill in the fields: Name (a descriptive label), Amount, Category, Frequency (Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly, Quarterly, or Yearly), and Include in metrics (whether it counts toward your totals and charts).
  4. Tap Save.
  5. A confirmation will appear. Tap OK to add another transaction or view the results on the Home screen.

Transaction Types

Expenses are outgoing money — bills, subscriptions, rent, food, and so on. Dioko stores these as negative amounts internally, so they reduce your financial position.

Income is incoming money — salary, freelance payments, rental income, dividends, and so on. These are stored as positive amounts and increase your financial position.

Understanding Frequency

You don't need to enter a monthly amount — enter the amount at whatever frequency it actually occurs. Dioko converts everything to a consistent weekly rate and then scales it up to your chosen reporting period.

The Metrics Flag

The Include in Metrics toggle controls whether a transaction is counted in the totals shown on the Home and Stats screens.

You might turn this off for a one-off or irregular item you want to record for reference but don't want distorting your regular financial picture. Transactions excluded from metrics are still visible in your transaction list and are marked with a red “(not included in metrics)” label in their detail view.

Adding a New Category

If the category you need doesn't exist yet:

  1. On the Add Transaction screen, tap the + (Add Category) button next to the category field.
  2. A sheet will appear. Type the category name and tap Save.
  3. The new category is immediately available in the category picker.
  4. Dismiss the sheet by tapping Done or swiping it down — the category picker will refresh automatically.

4. Managing Categories

Categories help you group transactions and understand your spending patterns. They appear in charts, the category breakdown on the Home screen, and throughout the Stats screen.

Viewing and Deleting Categories

  1. On the Add Transaction screen, tap the + (Add Category) button.
  2. The sheet shows all your existing categories in a list.
  3. To delete a category, swipe left on it and tap Delete.

Note: deleting a category does not delete transactions that are already assigned to it. Those transactions will retain their category label.

Tips for Naming Categories

Keep category names short and consistent so they display well in charts and labels. Good examples: Housing, Groceries, Transport, Utilities, Subscriptions, Health, Entertainment, Dining, Insurance, Salary, Freelance.

5. Home Dashboard

The Home screen gives you a real-time snapshot of your financial position.

Financial Summary Panel

At the top of the Home screen you'll see three figures: Monthly Position (your income minus your expenses for the month — your surplus or deficit), Monthly Expenses (total of all expense transactions scaled to a monthly amount), and Monthly Income (total of all income transactions scaled to a monthly amount).

Below the totals, a percentage figure shows your monthly position as a percentage of your monthly income — a quick measure of how much of your income you're keeping. Tap anywhere on this panel to refresh and re-animate the figures.

Bar Chart

The bar chart shows your top 5 expense categories ranked by monthly total. The height of each bar represents how large that category is relative to your biggest expense category. Tap the chart to refresh it.

Category Summary Strip

Below the bar chart, a horizontally scrollable strip shows each category and its monthly total. This includes both income and expense categories.

Transaction List

At the bottom of the Home screen is a table showing all transactions in the currently selected type (Expenses or Income). Use the Expenses / Income segmented control to switch between them. Each row shows the transaction name, category, amount, and frequency.

Tap a transaction to open its full detail view. Swipe left on a transaction to delete it.

Welcome Screen

If you haven't added any transactions yet, the Home screen shows a welcome prompt encouraging you to add your first transaction. This disappears automatically once your first transaction is saved.

Pull to Refresh

Pull down on the Home screen to refresh all figures, charts, and the transaction list.

6. Stats Screen

The Stats screen is a deeper view of your finances. It supports three reporting periods and shows breakdowns, charts, and a full transaction list.

Changing the Reporting Period

Use the Monthly / Quarterly / Yearly segmented control at the top to switch between periods. All totals, charts, and the transaction list update immediately.

Financial Totals

The three summary labels work the same as the Home screen but reflect the selected reporting period — so switching to Yearly shows what you spend and earn over a full year.

Percentage Variance

This figure shows your financial position (income minus expenses) as a percentage of your income for the selected period. A positive percentage means you are saving money; a negative percentage means expenses exceed income.

Category Chart (Utilities Doughnut)

The animated doughnut chart shows the breakdown of your Utilities category by individual transaction name. If you have multiple utility transactions (electricity, gas, internet, water), this chart shows each as a segment with a labelled percentage. The chart animates in when the screen loads. Tap it to reload the data. This chart only displays data if you have transactions assigned to a category named exactly “Utilities” (case-insensitive).

Bar Chart

Works the same as the Home screen bar chart, but shows up to 7 expense categories and reflects the selected reporting period. Tap the chart to refresh it.

Transaction List

The table at the bottom lists all transactions of the selected type (Expenses or Income), with amounts scaled to the current reporting period. So a $100/month subscription will show as $1,200 when Yearly is selected.

Use the Expenses / Income segmented control to switch the list. Tap a transaction to open its detail view. Swipe left to delete a transaction.

Pull to Refresh

Pull down on the Stats screen to reload all data.

7. Searching Transactions

Using the Search Bar

  1. Tap the Search tab.
  2. All your transactions are listed by default.
  3. Begin typing in the search bar. Dioko filters in real time by transaction name and category.
  4. Tap a result to open its detail view.
  5. Swipe left on any result to delete it.

Tips

8. Transaction Detail & Editing

Viewing a Transaction

Tap any transaction from the Home, Stats, or Search screens to open its detail view. You'll see the name, amount (formatted as currency), category, frequency, yearly total (the transaction amount scaled to one full year), quarterly total (the yearly total divided by four), a note if the transaction is excluded from metrics, and an image indicating whether it's an expense (receipt) or income (card).

Editing a Transaction

  1. From the Transaction Detail screen, tap Edit (or the edit button in the top right).
  2. The Edit Transaction screen opens with the current values pre-filled.
  3. Update any of the following fields: Name, Amount, Category, Metrics flag (Include in Metrics toggle).
  4. Tap Update to save your changes.

The detail screen will refresh immediately to show the updated values, and the change is saved to your device.

Note: frequency cannot currently be changed when editing a transaction. To change the frequency, delete the transaction and re-add it with the correct frequency.

9. Profile & Settings

Updating Your Profile

  1. Go to the Profile tab.
  2. Tap Edit Profile (or the update profile button).
  3. Update any of the following: full name, mobile number, city, country, profile photo (tap your profile image to choose a photo from your library).
  4. Tap Save to confirm changes.

Profile Photo

Tap your profile picture on the Update Profile screen to open your photo library. Select a photo and crop it. The image is saved locally on your device.

Advice Card

The Profile screen displays a short piece of financial or general advice that refreshes each time you open the screen. This is fetched from a free public API (adviceslip.com) — it requires an internet connection and no personal data is sent.

Sign Out / Delete Account

Tap Sign Out to return to the Sign In screen — your data is preserved. Tap Delete Account to permanently erase all data (see Deleting Your Account above for full details).

10. Backup, Export & Import

Because Dioko stores all data on your device, we strongly recommend exporting a backup regularly — especially before updating iOS, resetting your device, or switching to a new phone.

Exporting Your Data

  1. Go to the Profile tab.
  2. Tap the Download / Export button.
  3. The iOS share sheet will appear with a .txt backup file.
  4. Save it to your Files app, AirDrop it to your Mac, or email it to yourself.

The export file contains all your transactions and categories in a structured plain-text format.

Importing Your Data

  1. Locate your previously exported .txt backup file (in Files, email, etc.).
  2. Go to the Profile tab in Dioko.
  3. Tap the Upload / Import button.
  4. Select your backup file from the document picker.
  5. A confirmation prompt will appear warning that this will replace your current data.
  6. Tap Import to proceed.

Warning: importing a file replaces your existing transactions and categories. If you have new data entered since your last export, it will be overwritten. Export a fresh backup first if you need to preserve recent entries.

When to Export

11. Notifications

Dioko has an in-app notifications centre that displays messages from the app — such as a welcome message when you first create your account. These are internal app messages, not iOS push notifications.

Tap the bell icon in the top right corner of any main screen to open the Notifications screen. Unread notifications are shown in bold. A red badge on the bell icon indicates how many unread notifications you have.

Tap a notification to open its full detail — title, body text, and the date it was received. Opening a notification marks it as read and the badge count decreases. Swipe left on any notification and tap Delete to remove it permanently.

12. Troubleshooting

My transactions aren't showing on the Home screen

Make sure the Expenses / Income segmented control is set to the correct type. Pull down to refresh the screen. Check that the transactions have the Include in Metrics toggle turned on. Navigate away and return to the Home tab to force a full reload.

The bar chart appears empty

The chart shows your top expense categories. If you only have income transactions, the chart will be empty. If you have expense transactions, tap the chart to trigger a refresh, and make sure at least one is set to type Expense with Include in Metrics enabled.

The Utilities doughnut chart is empty

The doughnut chart only reads transactions assigned to a category named “Utilities” (any case). If your utility transactions are in a category with a different name (e.g. “Bills” or “Household”), they won't appear here.

Face ID / Touch ID isn't working

Go to Profile and toggle Biometrics off and back on to re-enrol. Make sure Face ID or Touch ID is set up in your iPhone's Settings, and restart the app and try again.

I forgot my password

On the Sign In screen, tap Forgot Password. You will need to use Face ID or Touch ID to verify your identity before setting a new password. If you cannot complete biometric verification, please contact support.

My data disappeared after reinstalling the app

Unfortunately, uninstalling Dioko deletes all locally stored data, including transactions, categories, and your account — a limitation of on-device storage. If you exported a backup file before uninstalling, you can restore it using the Import feature.

The import isn't working

Make sure you are selecting a .txt file that was exported from Dioko and hasn't been edited or renamed. Check that the file is accessible in the iOS Files app or document picker.

The advice card on the Profile screen is blank

The advice card requires an internet connection to load. Check your connection, then try leaving and returning to the Profile screen to trigger a fresh fetch.

The app is running slowly or acting unexpectedly

Force-close Dioko and reopen it, or restart your iPhone. Make sure you are running the latest version from the App Store. If the problem persists, export your data, delete and reinstall the app, then import your backup.

Amounts are showing incorrectly

Dioko uses the Australian Dollar (AUD) format, displayed with a $ symbol and two decimal places. When entering amounts, type digits only — the formatter applies the currency symbol and decimal point automatically.

13. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dioko free?

Dioko is available on the App Store. Check the App Store listing for current pricing.

Does Dioko sync across my devices?

Not currently. Dioko is a local-only app. Your data lives on the device where you entered it. Use the Export and Import features to transfer data to a new device.

Can I use Dioko on my iPad?

Dioko is built for iPhone. It may run on iPad in compatibility mode, but the interface is optimised for iPhone screen sizes.

Is my financial data sent to the internet?

No. All your transactions, profile information, and credentials are stored locally on your device. The only network request the app makes is to fetch a random advice quote on the Profile screen, and this contains no personal data.

How does Dioko calculate my monthly total if I enter a weekly expense?

Dioko normalises everything to a weekly amount first, then multiplies by 4.33 for monthly, 13 for quarterly, and 52 for yearly — reflecting the actual average number of weeks per month (52 ÷ 12 = 4.33) rather than simply multiplying by 4.

What's the difference between “Include in Metrics” on and off?

Transactions with it on are counted in your financial totals, percentage variance, and charts. Transactions with it off are still stored and visible in your lists and detail view, but don't affect any calculations.

Can I add a one-off expense rather than a recurring one?

All transactions in Dioko are treated as recurring at the frequency you select. For a one-off item you still want to track, set the frequency to Yearly and turn off Include in Metrics so it doesn't affect your recurring totals.

Can I have multiple accounts?

Dioko currently supports one account per device — there is no multi-user or family mode in this version.

What happens to my data if I update the app?

App updates from the App Store preserve your locally stored data. Your transactions, categories, and profile will remain intact after an update.

Can I move my data to a new iPhone?

Yes, using the Export and Import feature. On your old phone, go to Profile → Export and save the file. On your new phone, create a new account, then go to Profile → Import and select the file.

Why does the Stats screen show different amounts from the Home screen?

The Home screen always shows monthly totals. The Stats screen reflects whichever period you have selected — Monthly, Quarterly, or Yearly.

I deleted a transaction by accident. Can I undo it?

Unfortunately, transaction deletion cannot be undone. If you have a recent export backup, you can re-import it to restore your data. We recommend exporting regularly to minimise data loss risk.

The percentage figure on the dashboard — what exactly does it measure?

It is your financial position as a percentage of your income. For example, if your monthly income is $5,000 and your monthly expenses are $3,500, your position is +$1,500, which is 30% of income.
